Virtual Field Trips (VFTs) are a technology based way of experiencing educational institutions. Traditional field trips are not always safe, affordable, or logical for all students. VFTs are an alternative option to traditional field trips because it allows students to have a one-on-one interaction with experts. Students get to experience things that are not possible to do inside a classroom. For example, students can visit outer space during a VFT to gain an in-depth understanding of stars and planets. During a traditional field trip schools have to pay for the cost of transportation, lunch, and admission to educational institute. But if weather conditions are bad, it is not a good idea to travel to a museum 2 hours away. A VFT allows teachers and students to safely experience a museum without the cost of travel and with the luxury of staying in a classroom. There are two different types of VFTs: Interactive and Asynchronous. Interactive VFTs are in real-time and can be conducted with large groups of students. Asynchronous VFTs are not delivered in real-time but are recorded videos on a website devoted to one topic/idea. The benefits of VFTs are they encourage students to interact with experts who can give them detailed information about a topic. VFTs also remove barriers that a classroom or traditional field trip would possess. For example, if a class is studying the solar system a VFT allows for students to experience space travel. During a VFT in space students can view stars, planets, and moons like never before! It is a great opportunity that a traditional field trip cannot give.
